Breakfast Like a King

Breakfast like a King
Lunch like a Prince and
Dinner like a Pauper

I often hear people say that they don't have time for breakfast; I say to them "You don't have time not to have breakfast!"

Why is breakfast important?  The word says it all "breaks your fast".  Eating breakfast increases your metabolic rate and this means that you burn up more kilojoules all through the day.

While you are asleep, your metabolism slows down which enables you to sleep.  When you eat breakfast, your metabolism gets started.  If you do not eat breakfast then your metabolism stays at the same slow overnight rate, and this is why people who do not eat breakfast train their body not to feel hungry; they genuinely are not hungry because their metabolism is on "go slow".

Eating breakfast kicks up your metabolism.  You eat and digest the food and then your body looks for more fuel - this is a good thing!

We know that eating keeps the metabolism working which burns up kilojoules - and this is what we want for our body.  The faster our metabolism, the better chance we have of losing weight.

I have some clients who have lost weight JUST BY ADDING BREAKFAST to their day, and not making any other changes to the way they eat.

What to eat for breakfast?

If you have not been in the habit of eating breakfast, then start with something small and simple:
  • Fruit: eat a piece of fruit because this will give you fibre and is more filling than juice. Some juices are very sugar laden.
  • Cereal: try a small serve; again, watch out for sugar.  Maybe try porridge or one of the simple cereals, like wheetbix or Vita brits, with low fat or skim milk.
  • Toast or plain muffin: one slice of toast with ricotta cheese, vegemite OR 1/4 avocado - skip the butter, or spread.  Not sugar muffins, not croisants, nor Danish pastries - keep it simple.

If you have not been in the habit of eating breakfast, this is a great chance to create new Healthy Habits !!  Avoid the sugar!!  It will be easier to avoid fat if you are not in the habit of eating breakfast - keep this habit !!

For people who are already eating breakfast - review what you are eating.
  • do you eat a variety of items for breakfast?
  • how much fat are you eating?
  • how much sugar is in your breakfast?
  • are you eating fruit rather than having juice?
  • check your portion size, remember your stomach is about the size of your clenched fist
 Some breakfast tips:
  • use a small plate or bowl to ensure you are eating the correct portion size, especially for cereals
  • buy a set of scales so you can measure the recommended serve
  • when having toast enjoy a spread such as ricotta or vegemaite, without adding butter/ margarine
  • when buying bread, try to keep the salt under 400mg per 100g
  • avoid croisants - the fat in one croissant = the fat in 17 slices of bread!
  • eat fruit rather than having fruit juice
  • can you partly prepare breakfast in the evening before you go to bed?  this will save you time in the morning.
  • If you absolutely cannot eat breakfast at home and usually buy breakfast on your way to work, try to keep some breakfast items in your office kitchen or bring your breakfast with you; often the breakfast choices at cafes are high in fat and sugar laden - not a healthy start to your day.  Those ziplock plastic bags are fabulous for carrying cereal or slice of bread.

Wishing you Happy Healthy Wealthy breakfast eating !!

I do have to admit that I enjoy studying your blog, even when I do not agree with you. I guess the principal factor would be to make people believe. One of these days I will get around to beginning a blog. It'll possibly be extra for blowing off steam and less informative than yours is though. Keep writing and I will keep reading through.
